Colorado agents tout seven arrests as blow to major drug ringGOLDEN, Colorado - Colorado drug agents Monday announced seven arrests they said deal a major blow to a metro-area drug ring with ties to Mexico and Arizona.
The arrests follow an 18-month undercover investigation by federal authorities and the West Metro Drug Task Force and the seizure of high- quality methamphetamine worth about $500,000, as well as other drugs and a large amount of cash, Colorado agents said.
"As a result of this case, we believe that a domestic cell of an international methamphetamine trafficking organization no longer exists," said Jeffrey D. Sweetin, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration's Denver, Colorado Division.
Those charged include Linda Martinez, 43, of Denver, Colorado; her brother, David Martinez, 42, of Denver; her daughter, Tanika Martinez, 25, of Denver, Colorado; Mike Rael, 45, of Denver, Colorado; Abraham Cruz, 18, of Mexico; Stanley Wayne Erickson, 44, of Littleton; and Rhonda Erickson, 42, of Littleton.
The suspects, who are in the Jefferson County, Colorado Jail, could face four to 120 years in prison if convicted.
As part of the crackdown, dubbed "Operation Speed Trap," officers served six search warrants at Denver, Colorado-area residences.
They turned up about nine pounds of methamphetamine, a pound of cocaine, three ounces of heroin, five pounds of marijuana and about $48,000, authorities said at a news conference. A number of weapons also were found.
Colorado investigators said the metro drug ring sold 20 to 30 pounds of methamphetamine a month.
Tests on the methamphetamine seized in the raids indicate that it was at least 90 percent pure. The purity of the drug indicates it was produced by a sophisticated operation in Mexico with close ties to the Denver ring, authorities said.
Information obtained from wiretaps suggests the metro ring was supplying smaller dealers and has ties to a contact in Sinaloa, Mexico, investigators said.
"The higher purity generally indicates the closer to the source of supply the organization is linked," Sweetin said.
Jefferson County, Colorado is prosecuting the suspects because the investigation began with an undercover drug purchase in the county, said Pam Russell, spokeswoman for the district attorney.
More than 35 officers and federal agents took part in the searches, in which two vehicles also were seized. One of the vehicles had concealed compartments that investigators believe were used to transport drugs and money.
The operation is ongoing and could result in more arrests, agents said.
